“Preserving today and securing tomorrow from foundation to roof.” Furey Asset Services is a leader in the South Florida property preservation industry. Working with John Furey of Furey Asset Services, an American veteran and all around great guy, has been inspirational. As I continue my entrepreneurial journey with Simplified, I have the honor of getting to know and working with amazing people in different industries. I feel especially motivated when I meet a fellow local business owner whose passion for their business is as bright as mine. Furey Asset Services believes in quality, discipline and client-satisfaction.
Tell me the story of Furey Asset Services and how it came to be!
I was working for a medium-sized, regional mortgage field service company servicing foreclosed homes as Field Services Manager. While I held that position, I learned a lot about the mortgage field service industry (property preservation) and the various services that banks seek from contractors such as myself. It really set the stage for me starting my own venture and, I believe it really separates me from my competition; having been on the management side to now running my own operation.
What surprised you most about starting your own business?
Personally, I was amazed how quickly things just sort of “came together.” At the same time, this was an incredible amount of work—I underestimated the sheer amount of work—but it became fruitful once I was able to juggle multiple tasks and duties to fit both the business needs and my schedule.
What are you most curious about in life?
I am most curious about where this journey is going to take me. In a more general sense, the “unknown” and how I can tackle the next coming obstacle.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give yourself?
I should have started this business so much earlier. Working for myself I am able to hold myself accountable for my own successes and failures.
Pick one word that best describes the way you work.
What you surround yourself with is important, what’s your workspace like?
One of my workspaces is your typical home office—desk, laptop, family pictures, etc. My other work spaces change day to day; I could be removing a tree that fell on a roof of a single family home, or meeting with city officials at municipalities. I really enjoy the changes of day to day operations, no two days are alike that’s for sure!
How do you balance work and life?
I have a large family as well as a wife and a 15 month old daughter. I try to set my schedule to work reasonable hours without sacrificing productivity allowing me to spend time more time with my family than a typical 9-5 would allow.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever received (and from whom)?
“Slow is pro.” – BMC Matt White, USCG
What are you most excited about as an entrepreneur in the property preservation industry?
I am excited to see how technology is going to continue to shape how we perform work in the field. Over the past few years there have been many implementations as far as integrating smartphones
If a genie granted you 3 wishes right now, what would you wish for?
I don’t believe in genies 🙂
A ship in the harbor is safe, but that’s not what ships are built for.
